Balears Wreck Diving Mallorca
Calvia Town Council together with a collection of prominent local businessmen and marine conservationists have come up with a plan to sink a 136 meter frigate in between the marine nature reserves of El Toro and Isla Malgrats. The sinking of the vessel will bring together the two marine nature reserves to make one large protected area. Where no commercial fishing will be permitted. The project is currently in the awaiting the apporval of the Madrid Government and the Balearic Government.
Environmental feasibility studies have been conducted to asses the affects on both the underwater and surface environments. The former Spanish Navy 136 meter frigate 'Balears' will be scuttled and come to rest at a depth of 40 meters. The bridge of the wreck will be at 18 metres.
The location of the site where she is to be sunk have been specifically chosen with the recreational scuba diver in mind. There will be three permanent buoys to mark the location one at the stern, one at the bow and one on or around the bridge. Several holes are to be cut into the wreck to allow qualified wreck scuba divers to penetrate and explore the massive interior.
The latest news (04/2007) on the propsed sinking of the Balears wreck is that the any decisions will be made after the local / national elections that are due to be held in May.
